Common Questions

What You May Want To Know.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation is a non-surgical treatment that uses carefully placed pigment to create the appearance of tiny hair follicles on the scalp. It can help soften thinning areas, restore the look of density, define a hairline or camouflage visible scalp scarring.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation suitable for me?

SMP may be suitable for many types of hair loss, including thinning areas, receding hairlines, alopecia and visible scalp scars. During your free consultation, Lux will assess your scalp, hair loss pattern and goals to advise what may be realistic for you.

Will the result look natural?

The aim is always a soft, realistic and undetectable finish. Every treatment is planned around your natural features, existing hair pattern, skin tone and desired result.

How many sessions will I need?

Most SMP treatments are completed over 3 sessions, allowing the result to be built gradually for a soft, natural-looking finish. The exact number can depend on the treatment area, level of hair loss, desired density and how your skin heals. Scar camouflage may require additional sessions, as scar tissue can hold pigment differently and often needs a more gradual approach.

Is there downtime after treatment?

There is usually minimal downtime, but aftercare is important. You will be given clear guidance on what to avoid while the scalp heals, including advice around washing, sweating, sun exposure and products.

What aftercare do I need to follow after SMP?

Aftercare is important to help your SMP heal properly and keep the result looking its best. For the first 1–4 days, avoid touching, washing or getting the treated area wet. You should also avoid sweating, shaving, heat and direct sunlight during this early healing stage.

From days 5–7, you can gently wash the scalp with a mild soap, but avoid scrubbing. You can also begin applying moisturiser if the scalp feels dry or flaky, while still avoiding heavy exercise or anything that causes sweating.

From days 8–14, you can gradually return to normal activities, but you should continue avoiding direct sunlight. Daily SPF 30–50 is recommended to help protect the pigment from fading.

From day 15 onwards, keep the scalp hydrated, continue using sunscreen daily and avoid harsh chemicals. Gentle exfoliation can be introduced when appropriate to help maintain the scalp and keep the result looking fresh.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?

Discomfort levels vary from person to person, but many clients find the treatment manageable. Lux will guide you through what to expect and make the experience as calm and comfortable as possible.

How long does SMP last?

SMP is designed to be long-lasting, with results typically lasting around 3–5 years, depending on your skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure and aftercare. Over time, the pigment can gradually soften, so a refresher top-up may be recommended when needed. In most cases, a refresher is usually one session.

How much does Scalp Micropigmentation cost?

Pricing depends on the type of treatment, size of the area, level of hair loss, density required and number of sessions needed. Because every client is different, Lux will provide clear pricing guidance during your free consultation before any treatment is booked.

Can SMP help with scars?

SMP can help reduce the contrast between visible scalp scars and the surrounding area. This may include FUE scars, FUT strip scars or other scalp trauma scars. Every scar is different, so it will be assessed carefully during consultation.

Can SMP help with alopecia?

SMP may help create the appearance of coverage in areas affected by alopecia or patchy hair loss, depending on the pattern and desired result. Lux will assess the area and explain what may be suitable during consultation.

Is SMP suitable for women?

Yes, SMP may be suitable for women experiencing thinning or visible scalp areas. The approach is usually softer and focused on reducing scalp visibility while working with the client's existing hair.

Will I need to shave my hair?

This depends on the type of treatment and your existing hair pattern. Some clients may need to keep the hair very short for the most natural blend, while density clients may be able to keep longer hair. Lux will advise what is suitable during consultation.

What happens during the free consultation?

Your consultation is a relaxed, no-pressure first step. Lux will listen to your concerns, assess your hair loss pattern, discuss your goals and explain what may be possible before any treatment is booked.
